Before you make a big decision, don't only ask, What do I want?
Ask yourself this instead
Am I choosing this because I genuinely want it, or because I'm tired of my current situation?
If nobody knew about this decision, would I still make it?
Am I running towards something, or simply trying to escape something?
What will this decision cost me, not just financially, but emotionally, mentally and with my time?
Can I actually afford the consequences if this doesn't work out?
What am I giving up to make this choice?
Am I making this decision because it makes sense for me, or because I'm afraid of disappointing someone?
What does my life look like six months from now if I say yes?
What does it look like if I say no?
Am I ignoring something important because I really want this to work?
Have I looked at the facts, or am I making this decision based mainly on how I feel today?
If this involves another person, have I paid attention to their behaviour, or am I making decisions based on their promises?
And one more:
If I were advising someone I love in this exact situation, what would I tell them?
Sometimes you already know the answer.
You just need to be honest enough with yourself to admit it.
