On January 16, 2026, about 80 militants in Cross River walked in and surrendered their weapons. Not after a shootout nor under duress. They handed over AK-47s, explosives, and speedboats at Atimbo under Operation OKWOK, working with the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade.
What stands out to me is the approach that led to this moment. The military isn’t calling it a victory of force, but of dialogue, steady patrols, and state support. That’s interesting. It suggests trust was built, not imposed.
For communities along the waterways, this is huge. It’s means safer movement, fewer attacks, and the hope that daily life can finally feel predictable again.
The next phase is the real test. These ex-fighters are being profiled for training and reintegration, and that process will decide whether this becomes lasting peace or just a pause.
