If you live in Lagos, you already know money disappears fast if you’re not careful. I’ve learned the hard way, so now I shop smart. These are the little tricks I personally use that save me money almost every time.
First, I like to shop late instead of early.
I used to think going out early was the best move, but I realized evenings are where the real deals happen. Sellers are tired and just want to close sales, so they’re more willing to reduce prices. I’ve gotten things way cheaper just by showing up later in the day.
Second, I never start by asking how much.
Instead of sounding like I don’t know what I’m doing, I say something like “what’s your last price” or “how much for me.” It changes the whole vibe. The seller already knows I’m not here to play, and the price usually drops immediately.
Third, I avoid the fine-looking shops.
Those places can be tempting, but I’ve learned that the really affordable stuff is usually deeper inside the market or with smaller vendors. Once I started buying where people actually buy, I noticed I was spending way less.
Fourth, I try to buy more than one thing.
Even if I didn’t plan to, I sometimes add one extra item just to negotiate better. Once you say you’re taking two or three things, the seller is more open to giving you a good deal. It works almost every time.
Finally, I’m not afraid to walk away.
This one takes confidence, but it works like magic. If the price isn’t right, I just start leaving. Many times, they call me back with a better offer. That’s when I know I’ve gotten closer to the real price.
Living in Lagos teaches you these things quickly. If you don’t learn, your wallet will keep suffering.
Which one of these have you actually tried before?
