I thought I was prepared for camp… I wasn’t.
Here are a few things I learned the hard way so you don’t have to:
1. My hair stressed me out more than camp activities
I went with a style that needed effort. Big mistake. You’re always in your cap, and you’re expected to keep your hair packed. Simple styles will save you.
2. Two buckets saved my life
Water isn’t always there when you need it. Having extra stored water came through more times than I can count.
3. I underestimated wipes
There were days I was too tired to do anything. Wipes helped me clean up, freshen my face, and even wipe my sneakers.
4. Sunscreen is not optional
Camp sun is intense. I didn’t joke with mine, and I’m glad I didn’t.
5. I had to remind myself to drink water
Between drills and the heat, it’s easy to get dehydrated without even realizing it.
6. Camp will collect your money in small small ways
Food, charging your phone, hot water… it adds up quickly. Going with enough money made things easier.
7. They took someone’s metal hanger at the gate
After seeing that, I was glad I packed plastic ones.
8. Bigger sneakers made a huge difference
I sized up, and it paid off. A lot of people were struggling with tight shoes while mine were comfortable.
9. Extra white tops helped me
Laundry isn’t always convenient. Having backups saved me from stress.
10. I didn’t joke with locking my box
Even if I was stepping out for a minute, I locked it. Better safe than sorry.
Bonus:
That small blanket I almost didn’t pack? I used it every single night.
Camp will humble you, but if you prepare well, you’ll enjoy it a lot more.
